Global People

"Global People" never fully adjust to one culture: their own or their adopted one. Their old philosophy of ethnocentrism and uniformity is shattered (meaning: everything is equal, or my way is best). They now have a new philosophy of cultural variety (meaning: there are differences that work in each place). Within themselves, global people are a part of both worlds. When abroad, Americans dream of America and need little rituals that reaffirm this part of themselves--a food package from home, a letter, an American visitor from "home" who brings the latest news. When in America, they dream of their adopted country, and need little rituals that reaffirm this part of themselves--a conversation in that language with someone from "home" who shares the latest news, a meal with its food. They become alienated from those from their homeland, and they never fully fit into their adopted country. They find that their closest assosiates are other global people. Global people seem happiest when they are flying from one country to the other!
(from Cultural Differences by Paul Hiebert)
